The Rings Thing by Lbilover

Originally written in 2005 for the Toilanddrouble crossover challenge. This is a crossover with Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next books.

“Miss Next, you’re needed in The Lord of the Rings,” said Miss Havisham. “The book has gone blank three pages into the last chapter. It’s creating wide-spread panic.”

I read myself in at The Grey Havens, landing outside the newly-restored Bag End. Two hobbits stared at me defiantly; they were holding hands. “Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee, I presume?” They nodded.

A hobbit seated nearby, holding Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of the Rights of Women, glared at me. C-grade trying to become multidimensional, I thought. “I don’t want to marry and bear thirteen children, Miss Next. I want to become mayor of the Shire.”

“And Mr. Frodo wants to stay at Bag End with me, not go over Sea,” declared Sam, putting his arm around a pallid Frodo. “He gets seasick something fierce.”

I thought fast. Generations of readers had cried at the end of Rings. Nearly everyone- myself included- wanted Frodo and Sam to stay together. “All right.” Rosie pumped her fist. Frodo and Sam hugged.

Readers saw words begin to fill the blank pages:

‘When are you going to move in and join me, Sam?’

Sam beamed happily.

‘Straight away, Mr. Frodo…’

Another successful mission for Thursday Next, Literary Detective.
